Upcoming Events April Saturday, April 5. JFS offers low income seniors a UMS concert featuring Choir of King's College, Cambridge, 8:00 p.m. Hill Auditorium. JFS offers a concert recital for older adults featuring Orpheus Singers, at Blanche Anderson Moore Hall, 3:00 pm. The event is free. Jewish Family Services hosts “Caregiver Conversations,” a drop-in support group for adult children caring for aging parents from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. at the JCC, Free. The group is cosponsored with the Ann Arbor Reconstructionist Havurah, Temple Beth Emeth, Beth Israel Congregation, Jewish Cultural Society, and the Jewish Community Center. The free sessions are part of the JFS Caregiver Concierge program funded by the Jewish Federation. Wednesday, April 23: A Traditional Community Seder for All Older Adults and their Families, with guests Rabbi Robert Levy and Cantor Annie Rose from Temple Beth Emeth. Join with friends new and old to enjoy a delicious catered Passover meal, special music, and thought-provoking discussion of the ways in which Passover themes are uniquely relevant to the lives of older adults 5:00-7:30 p.m. at the JCC. JFS & JCC convenes its monthly Thursday, April 24: Passover Celebration featuring "Songs from the Haggadah – New Music for Pesach." Enjoy this very special collaboration between local stars Sandor and Laszlo Slomovitz (Gemini) and Rabbi Dobrusin as they perform new melodies for familiar songs from the Haggadah. The gathering of parents, mental health, medical, legal and educational professionals will explore resources available and resources needed to assist families with pre-teen and teenage children at risk of crisis behavior. Caregiver Conversations: A Support Group for Adult Children Caring for Aging Parents Jewish Family Services convenes “Caregiver Conversations,” a monthly drop-in educational and support group for adult children in a variety of caregiving roles for their aging parents. This month’s session explores the following: When is the right time to consider alternative housing arrangements for aging loved ones? How do you broach that subject, and what are the options? Guest speaker Justine Bykowski, Housing Counseling Coordinator at the Housing Bureau for Seniors, will discuss choices for residential care ranging from continuing care retirement communities, independent living facilities, assisted living, nursing homes, small group homes, and more, after which we will share in open discussion. 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center ( 2935 Birch Hollow Drive). Ages and Stages of Adoption: We invite adoptive and prospective adoptive families to come hear Dr. Jerri Jenista share her professional expertise about the ages and stages of adoption. Participants will have an opportunity to ask Dr. Jenista questions, meet with other adoptive parents and pick up adoption related materials. We invite all members of the community to join us afterwards to help plan for the 2008-2009 Stars of David Adoption Support Network calendar. Recurring Events - Classes and Support Groups Monthly sessions on Thursdays. JFS and JCC cosponsors Support group for those who are unemployed in midlife. The group will meet on Monday afternoons from 1:00-2:00 p.m. from December 3rd to January 21st, at the Jewish Community Center ( English as a Second Language JFS offers free ESL classes to anyone who needs practice with their English skills to enhance conversation and communication. Some students are preparing for employment through the county's Work First, while others are there to practice their speaking, reading and writing skills.
