Andrew Rudick: 2009 Tax & Accounting Community Champion Award Winner
Jewish Family Services of Washtenaw County ($500 award)
Jewish Family Services of Washtenaw County (JFS) provides a wide range of social services to individuals and families in need, regardless of race, religion, or ethnicity. Most clients are served in Washtenaw County Michigan (Ann Arbor), and ongoing services are beginning to branch out to other parts of Michigan and in surrounding states. Andrew Rudick, a member of the Senior Specialty Sales Group in our Research & Guidance business, has served on the agency’s Finance Committee since 2004. He has helped the agency to double its budget and encouraged the board to change their investment strategy which has generated an additional US$25,000 income each year.
During fiscal year 2007-08, JFS served 820 clients. During fiscal year 2008-09, JFS served 1036 clients, an increase of 26 percent.
“At this time of economic turmoil, it is more important than ever for those of us who can help those in trouble do so,” said Rudick. “For so many people, one unexpected medical bill, a large utility bill, or a major home repair can lead to a financial crisis. JFS is there to help those in need with compassion and assistance in finding referrals and resources.”
Rudick’s role has focused on increasing the financial security of the agency during a time of critical growth and development. In addition to serving on the Board of Directors and Finance Committee, he was asked to join the new Strategic Planning committee, which explores the current economic climate in Southeast Michigan and the impact it is having on JFS. Rudick leads by example and has encouraged his peers to participate in fundraising and volunteer events.
“Volunteerism has been a significant part of my upbringing as it was with my parents when they grew up as first generation Americans in Detroit,” explained Rudick. “Having an active role in the community that I live in has been one of the few constants in my life. It has been instrumental in helping me develop the skills needed for working in a team environment and demonstrating perseverance in the face of challenges and setbacks.”
