Education

The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program provides training for foreign born adults in need of improving their English language skills.  The program features instructions for various levels of English language proficiency, including Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced.  The program covers a wide range of English language skills, from the fundamentals of pronunciation, comprehension, vocabulary and grammar, to advanced conversation and writing.

The ESL program at JFS is more than a language training curriculum.  It is also designed to provide the newly arrived foreign student with social, cultural, and practical skills to help them adjust to their new conditions of life in the U.S.  Also offered is computer training, resume writing, interview practice, and exposure to the American way of life through field trips, video presentations, and constant  question and answer time. A class in citizenship test practice could also be available, as well as one on one English tutors when appropriate and determined by the classroom teacher.

Since its inception in 1997, this program has served over 250 students from more than 15 countries.
