Volunteer Opportunities

Making a Difference

You can make a difference and become part of a rewarding experience through the JFS Volunteer Program. Volunteers perform an important role in fulfilling the agency's mission of service to the community. You are never too young or too old to make a difference in someone's life. The agency provides training and ongoing support for all of its volunteers.

There are opportunities to volunteer once a week, once a month or once a year, depending on your schedule.

We want to help you find the best match for your skills and interests.

If you would like more information about volunteer opportunities with Jewish Family Services, please call (734) 769-0209 or e-mail deborah@jfsannarbor.org

Volunteer opportunities JFS offers

Friendly Visitors

These special friends call on homebound, sick or disabled individuals, providing companionship and comfort. Visitors can develop an ongoing social relationship through regular visits with an older adult or a home or hospital bound individual.

Phone Visitors

Telephone reassurance calls are made from your home and offer human contact and reassurance to older adults in their homes.

Transportation Services

Volunteers drive those without transportation to medical appointments, shopping or community activities. Shopping aides may assist those in need with their shopping, or go shopping for homebound individuals.

Professional Services

Many of our refugee and low income clients are in need of legal, medical or counseling services. Volunteer your professional services on a one time basis or participate in a network of professional service providers willing to provide free or reduced fee services to those in need.

Administrative and Agency Support

JFS has many on-going projects at our office. Volunteer to assist with or lead one of these projects or simply to help with administrative tasks around the office, such as mailings, answering phones, making calls or writing letters. There are always projects that need your energy.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Volunteers

If you have experience teaching English or you would like to learn how to teach ESL, we need your help in the classroom.

Language Partners / Resettlement Volunteers

Establish a new friendship by meeting regularly with someone trying to perfect their English. Conversational English partners offer new Americans the opportunity to practice their new language, in either a classroom or individual setting. Language partners do not need to know a foreign language. Instruction is based on the discussion of current events and daily activities.

Skills Bank Volunteer

Volunteers share skills by providing simple repairs and maintenance in the homes of older adults. Professional services and trade skills are also needed to assist needy clients.

Hospitality Network Volunteers

Hospitality Network volunteers will be matched with new Americans to provide an introduction to the local community and American culture. This volunteer program will offer rewarding experiences for both individuals and families.
