AND GROWTH FROM THE JFS FAMILY
In the realm of addressing food insecurity, cultural sensitivity is paramount. For the Jewish community, maintaining dietary traditions is not just about sustenance but also a connection to heritage. Access to culturally and nutritionally appropriate food is a basic and critical need, equally important across all incomes, religious beliefs, and age groups. Jewish Family Services (JFS) in Ann Arbor has emerged as a vital lifeline, playing a pivotal role in ensuring that the Jewish elderly and other vulnerable members of our community are able to enjoy culturally appropriate and kosher meals in the most dignified and accommodating way. JFS’ commitment to addressing the unique needs of this community is evident through various initiatives, making them a unique and unparalleled resource. WISE at the J JFS's WISE at the J program operates as the County's only Kosher Senior Cafe, providing a welcoming space for Jewish seniors to gather, socialize, and enjoy nutritious kosher meals. WISE at the J not only addresses the nutritional needs of seniors but also fosters a sense of community and belonging. Yad Ezra Monthly Food Deliveries Recognizing that food insecurity is an ongoing challenge, JFS extends its support through monthly food deliveries in collaboration with Yad Ezra, a kosher foodbank, located in Berkley, MI. These deliveries ensure that Jewish seniors receive a consistent supply of kosher groceries, helping to alleviate the stress of grocery shopping and meal planning. Kosher Meals on Wheels (MOW) For those seniors who may face mobility challenges, JFS offers Kosher Meals on Wheels, ensuring that nutritious and kosher meals are delivered directly to their doorstep. This service not only addresses the physical limitations of seniors but also allows them to maintain their cultural and dietary practices. JFS Holiday Meal Initiatives JFS goes above and beyond in ensuring that no Jewish senior feels excluded during special occasions. During Hanukkah, they provide delectable latkes, bringing the warmth of tradition to seniors' homes. However, Passover holds a particularly significant place in the hearts of the Jewish community, and JFS rises to the occasion by providing a week of Kosher for Passover meals to seniors. In the tapestry of addressing food insecurity, the work of JFS in Washtenaw County is a meaningful example of how cultural sensitivity can be seamlessly integrated into service delivery. As we embrace the efforts of JFS in meeting the diverse needs of Jewish seniors, we want to celebrate the caring spirit of our community and the many helping hands (volunteers, donors, family caregivers, etc.) that make these vitally important programs possible.
